I should have made it myself in the diary. I disagree with Franks Rich about the people playing a part.

After the Newtown massacre last December of a first grade classroom and with 90% of the people in support of the background checks, when the bill stalled in the Senate, I decided they, as in the Senate, have almost noting to do with the people.

I'm including the 54 that didn't do much to stand up to the gun lobby's lies about heavily watered down legislation. I'm including the President who did not call the four Democrats responsible for killing the bill to read them the riot act. I'm including Harry Reid for not being able to get it done and now he's all about "We just don't have the votes."

That was enough for me to just give up on the whole fucking lot. And I expect nothing anymore from them. Just a whole bunch of coming news cycles dominated by stories of more mass shootings.

    •  90% preference is slightly misleading (1+ / 0-)

The problem is that while 90% favor more stringent gun regulations, the position is not a passionate one and is thus not a deteriminate in voting preference.  In contrast those who favor "2nd amendment rights" base their voting decisions primarily on that issue.  It's enough of an imbalance to reliably tip the scales against gun control.  Cast a vote that is mildly supported by a large majority, but is not likely to get their votes in the next election, or anger the gun nuts, who will definitely turn out for the challenger in the next election.

It's a similar dynamic with abortion rights.  Many women vote republican despite favoring abortion rights, but among those who oppose abortion, few of them vote democratic.
