  •  problem is, some of the more extreme rebel (8+ / 0-)

factions (or more precisely, their foreign backers, namely Saudi Arabia and Israel) will react to the news of a ceasefire by redoubling their efforts to suck America into this war.

This might just be a clever feint to divide the opposition, but they can't take the chance. As you say, even sham negotiations would hurt their cause. And if it turns out the negotiations aren't a sham, then all is lost.

They might be desperate enough to engineer a false flag operation that would give the US a casus belli for a strike.

is tiring of this war, especially with their dwindling influence on other rebel factions and the depravity of those same groups.  i don't believe FSA supports whole-scale ethnic cleansing as other rebel groups have proposed.

i think if FSA and assad settle accounts, then the other rebel groups will likely wage a guerilla war of terror.
