  •  What about his sister? What does she say (14+ / 0-)

about this?  Were they close sibling?  What options do your neighborhood and your school district offer for teenage kids?  Can he be redirected into some kind of vocational training?  Are there woodshop classes that get involved in building or rehabbing houses?  Does he like any sports?  I ask all these questions because a new environment for a kid like the one you describe must provide some opportunities for him to rewarded for constructive behavior and for him to reimagine himself, otherwise he will revert to the same type of companions and activities that got him into trouble to begin with.

Really liking this youth and being able to provide him a home will not be enough.  A solid male role model is key because most of the men in his life as you've described it so far have either failed him or confined him in the system.  Is there a compensating adult male available?

I'm sure you will come up with the right decision for yourself, the boy, and the girl you may adopt.  I admire your generous spirit and willingness to be part of the crucial mortar that holds young lives in a good place.
