      Well, I tried. Some of them thought so. Others thought I made them work too hard. I took that as a compliment.

        ...post-secondary.  It's required in the first couple of years, but for so many students who have never had a history teacher who was a storyteller, it's merely a collection of names and dates to be memorized.  It's a chore, not an adventure.

        Primary research, as you write, really does open up the real world of an era.  Your students seem to have been drawn in and encouraged to use whatever critical thinking skills they may have had.  Although all us teachers are told how important it is for a student to learn how to think for him/herself, so few leave high school without that understanding.  Thanks for putting it out there to your students.
