i've been off-line for a few weeks.    here's my take:   for me, a white woman, the word is still what i was taught it was, a slur, never to be used (spoken or typed).   i reject any white person's use of it in my presence (and i have, sad to say, within the last ten years, both in person and on-line).

but that is because i'm white.  those are my rules. for a black person the rules are whatever they decide they are.   absolutely 100% none of my business.

personally, i took no offense at bbb's use in his story.   it was his history, his experience, his story, his decision.

i would be extremely uncomfortable if the use of the word became common usage on dKos.  i want to continue to think of the word as a slur for me and mine.  in my thinking...  white people have no business ever getting used to the word... there isn't any way it will ever be reclaimed for us.

in one area of my life, that i won't reveal here, i have reclaimed a descriptive word.   not a big deal, but added to say i get and support the power of reclaiming.
