and not give either side ammunition against him.  That's the safest thing to do, since regardless of what he does, Cruz's filibuster attempt is going to fail.

    •  I don't think his doing nothing.... (0+ / 0-)

...will deny his opponents ammunition, particularly from the right.

The Tea Party would rather have a government shutdown than a CR funding the ACA. Given that it's all but certain that the public will blame the GOP for a shutdown, this indicates that they either know that their ideological stance could hurt the GOP's electoral chances and don't give a damn, or are in their own world of epistemic closure and think all the polls are wrong.

Given that, it's hard for McConnell to turn around and defend doing nothing to help Ted Cruz to the teabaggers as an act of political realism, since they've already said that ideology trumps realism (or reality itself) for them. And he's obviously not going to be able to do much to hurt Cruz's filibuster chances, at least not publicly.

Meanwhile, Matt Bevin will be asking the teabaggers what value there is in having the Senate Minority Leader be a Kentuckian, if he's not actually going to stand up and lead as a Tea Party Senator he supposedly supports takes a big political risk to stand up for what the Tea Party believes in.

      •  James - he is trying to walk the middle ground (0+ / 0-)

He can't oppose Cruz without significant political risk and hopes that by staying silent he can walk a tightrope. Viewing this purely from his political self interest, its probably McConnell's best play.

        "let's talk about that"
