Hippies are peace-loving individuals who were, generally progressive thinkers.

Tea Partiers are for the most part, low-information voters who are being suborned by the wealthy to astro-turf the appearance of a grass-roots rebellion against "that one" (hat tip to John McCain).

As a hippie, I resent being connected in ANY way with the Tea Party idiots...

America's LAST HOPE: vote the GOP OUT in 2014 elections. MAKE them LOSE the House Majority and reduce their numbers in the Senate. Democrats move America forward - Republicans take us backward and are KILLING OUR NATION!

perspective of how hippies were often viewed and portrayed. I understand the comparison can come across as offensive and I apologize for that.

Please note, I did not address what hippies or tea partiers actually believe - at. all. I only spoke to stereotypes. Widely held stereotypes.

It's easy to criticize me for buying into a false stereotype. I know I opened myself up to it. However, my point was that tea partiers are now being stereotyped in much the same way as hippies once were. I honestly see this as a positive development.

The stereotype is moving past liberal echo chambers and becoming widely disseminated and believed, and it is not very flattering for those tea partiers. You know, those knuckle-dragging, mouth-breathing, ignorant, old, white, gun-happy racists. Those guys.

Like it or not, hippies were maligned in much the same way. The stereotype of hippies that developed allowed conservatives to blame liberals for everything that's wrong with America.

The demonizing of hippies was a key step in the Reagan Revolution.

The demonizing of tea partiers is a key step in the end of conservative rule.

Your taking issue with how hippies and tea partiers are viewed. You don't like the comparison there. Again, I'm sorry, but that's not what I was talking about.

    •  tea partiers are useful idiots (0+ / 0-)

Well, they are useful to someone, but I don't know who.

      •  And, hippies were effective fools (1+ / 0-)

Foolish for believing they could change the world, remarkably effective in actually doing so.

Stereotypes are very, very broad, pretty much by definition. When you dig a little deeper, they just don't hold up.

But, they're also important short hand when conducting broad conversations. You used to be able to derail an idea simply by identifying its source as being some sort of hippie radical (See: Ayers, Bill - for recent attempts).

Now, "You're talkin' like a tea partier," has entered the lexicon. Woohoo! I very much prefer that kind of broad conversation.
