  •  what has happened to coal gives me some hope (6+ / 0-)

    it's been an immense struggle which i believe has turned the corner.  that's another reason why the xl decision is so important..a rejection sends an immediate message to investors that tar sands will have to spend much more than they are perhaps willing to make it to market. constant opposition has cost them time and money and investors don't like uncertainty.

      is that a significant component of the loss of market demand is that it's competing with cheap natural gas from hydrofracked wells - and given the depletion curves that are seen with those, I think they may hit Peak and decline in the aggregate quite rapidly.  If that happens before the move away from coal is "locked in" to the infrastructure, demand will return.
