  •  The editorial principle wouldn't have to change. (9+ / 0-)
and there isn't anything that I can see that would exempt DKos from it and force a fairly long established editorial principle to change somewhat radically
Daily Kos could just do what other major websites are likely to do in response to this law, and restrict membership to users who are over the age of 18 (or, at least, who claim to be over 18) instead of spending the money and development time to implement an entirely new site function.

    •  That would be sad. I recall the diary of the (8+ / 0-)

person who was looking forward to turning 18 just in time to vote for Obama.  That person wouldn't have been allowed to post, and this site and the country benefits from hearing the youths who want to vote and take part in the political process.  The youths of North Carolina who can no longer pre-register to vote in an effort to shield Republicans from young voters should be allowed to have their voices heard as well.

Besides, I have made comments I'd like to take back, even if I just posted them seconds before.  I'd love at least an edit ability for 5 minutes or so to fix typos.

      •  I'm not necessarily saying that's good. (1+ / 0-)

I don't disagree with that at all, but from a website owner's perspective—particularly on a site like this which is almost completely custom code—it's a choice between two things:

        A. Spend time and money to develop, test, and implement a completely new site function that would enable users to delete comments (and to deal with whatever thread-based chaos could result from that), or...

        B. Add some text on the new user form that says that site membership is only available to those over 18, and a checkbox on the form where the user certifies that he or she is over 18.

In terms of resourcing, the first one is significantly more expensive than the second one—which means that most site owners will likely opt for the second option, regardless of whether or not that consequence was intended by those who wrote this law.
