    Because of failure to maintain the rail bed, travel gets slower and bumpier the farther north you get - NYC to Albany is the fast/smooth/convenient leg.

    Which is a shame.  There is plenty of travel along that corridor, and a lot of people would enjoy being dropped off right downtown.  With a modest reordering of transportation priorities, we too could enjoy the splendid service that our forebears had in 1900.
