While the Chinese economy has become very market oriented the political leadership is a strong dictatorship, with limited political freedoms for Chinese citizens.

The Chinese leadership was terrified by what happened in the USSR when the economic and political systems both changed, in a radical fashion, at the same time. I was at a dinner for a dozen people in Shanghai in 1988 with the number two person at the Chinese central bank. He outlined with stunning clarity, and detail, the plan to move slowly to a market economy, but keep very firm control of the political process for a very long time. Everything he said turned out to be accurate.
