    to have experienced steam traction in any form other than as entertainment. One of my earliest memories (and I'm not sure it's really accurate) is of a trip from Aberdeen, MD to New York when I was 2 1/2; as we were passing through some big city, probably Philly, I caught a glimpse of a roundhouse that still sported some steam locomotives. Of course the Northeast Corridor had already been electrified, so the train I was on was being pulled by a GG-1. My family returned to New York, a few years later, just a few months before the Long Island Rail Road retired its last operating steam locomotives. So I never saw any of them at work.
