  •  My area in northern WI had a bumper crop (8+ / 0-)

of hornets and some kind of underground nesting yellowjackets this year. Normally I've had a phobia of both but this year there are so many I'm cured of that. I swear, earlier this summer my yard had a yellowjacket buzzing around the grass every 2-3 feet. My yard must be full of some sort of wasp pheromone--not a single home wasp has bothered me summer long but a half mile away my feet get stung.

I have a monster sized underground nest about 200 feet from my house. It's in the garden/orchard part of my yard. I already tried pouring about a quarter cup of gasoline down the hole and covering it with a rock but all that did was leave them pissed off the next morning. Any hints for getting rid of it? I've got some diatomaceous earth left over from a home flea infestation. Any chance that'll scratch their exoskeletons and kill them same as fleas?

Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a good carpenter to build one.--Sam Rayburn
