      If the electorate was conservative enough to elect a third party tea party candidate, then that candidate would have won the Republican primary. And with the Republican R in front of their name on the ballot, it would only increase the chance of their success.

      In such hyper conservative electorates, a third-party tea party candidate would cause a greater split between conservative voters giving Democrats a better chance to win in districts that they would not have won anyway.
