    from the failed experiment of employer-based health insurance.  That's your train wreck right there.  

    Before the 2008 crash, the rising cost of health insurance had already devoured the entirety of the middle class's income gains.  Employers were cutting coverage and increasing employee contributions because the rate of increase was far outstripping inflation and productivity.

    The 2008 crash perforated any illusion that the employer-based system was working or could work.  Employers responded to a downturn in the economy by throwing millions out of work (and off health insurance) and pushing those still working to do more for less.

    With or without the ACA, employer provided health insurance was doomed for all but the executive level.
