    coal companies:

Although -- one question comes to mind: Is coal good for anything other than burning?  Oil is a good chemical feedstock for a number of things, and would be valuable even if it were not used for fuel.  Don't know about coal.

...and is good for making steel. Y`know, like what they use for gears and structural parts in wind turbines.

      •  Does that generate CO2 into the atmosphere? (1+ / 0-)

Or, more accurately, if the furnaces were fired by hydrogen, or sustainably generated electricity, or even bio-methane, would it spew fossil CO2  into the atmosphere?

...amongst other things, so the coal provides the carbon.

Of course, they could also use petroleum coke.

is a non  environment-killing use for coal.

            Who'd a thunk it?

...is to cheaply rpovide huge quantities of coal for sale, ostensibly for power generation. MR requires less time and fewer people to get a huge volume of coal, but obviously is terrificly destructive. The object is to make money, not electricity.

steel is a fraction of the market for "thermal" coal that's burned for heat and electricity.  I don't know whether any metalurgical coal is mined via mountaintop removal.  But even after we switch all our power supplies to renewables, there will still be a little coal mined for steelmaking.
