  •  Equivalence? (0+ / 0-)

I am not talking about equivalence.  I'm talking about strategy.  You don't get progressive policies by choosing between a poor candidate and a certifiably crazy candidate.  You don't get progressive policies by supporting Democrats regardless of their background and values.  If we want to do more than just carp from the sidelines, we need to develop a strategy to get REAL progressives elected, assuming that's possible.

Oh, yes, you are. Your exact words were "we have two bad choices and have to support a bad one to avoid a worse one." You're implying that McAuliffe and Cuccinelli are equivalent, as in "both sides do it."
      I'm talking about strategy.
Indeed. You talking about a strategy of encouraging sane voters to stay home, so that extremists like Cuccinelli and Obenshain can get elected.

It's the only way that Cuccinelli can win. I am an opponent of this strategy.

By admitting that McAuliffe is far from a progressive, I am encouraging sane voters to stay home?  I am encouraging sane voters to consider why they find themselves in this exact pickle election after election, and start thinking about how to get out of that rut.

Sure, a sane voter ought to vote against Cuccinelli, but next time there's an election in Virginia or anywhere else in the country, is there going to be anyone that sane voter can be proud and excited to vote FOR?

We can't keep going in circles, and part of that problem is failing to admit that the Democratic candidate is center-right and a tool of the moneyed elites.  Unlike right-wingers, most left-of-center voters are able to tolerate ambiguity.

Actually, you haven't presented a shred of evidence that McAuliffe is non-progressive. His positions on gun violence, climate change, women's reproductive rights, and oral sex are progressive enough for me.

Do you think you're some sort of genius for coming up with this idea?

Regardless, there will be primaries to choose Democratic candidates in 2014 and 2016. These candidates don't just fall out of the sky.

This is 2013. McAuliffe didn't just fall out of the sky, either. The Democrats had a primary in June, and McAuliffe was the only candidate who entered. Are you willing to take some responsibility for this turn of events?
