    and get away with it?

I'm sorry, but speak for yourself there.  Most people I know who watched the show, myself included, wanted it to end with him dead or captured.

I also hated this season and the second half of the previous one, though.

I think the problem with Dexter is that it actually had the potential to be similar to Breaking Bad.  It could've been an examination of Dexter as a person, and whether what he did was justified by the fact that he was doing it to bad people.

In fact, the first four or five seasons did that fairly well.  But then the writers seemed obsessed with always making Dexter out to be the good guy.  I was extremely pissed off in the final season when Deb drives the car off the bridge, in an attempt to kill him, and afterwards, the serial killer has the nerve to accuse HER of being in the wrong.  What's worse, that seemed to be the opinion of the show's writers.

Sorry, but Breaking Bad was just an objectively better show, IMO.

I believe the team change was after season 4, which explains a lot.

Apparently there was an interview with the showrunner and many of the head writers after the change where it seemed like they basically viewed Dexter as a superhero.

Also, I saw an interview with the original showrunner, and he was asked about what his plan was to end the series.  He said his ideal ending would've been for the whole series to turn out to have been a flashback in Dexter's mind as he lies on the table ready to be executed by the state of Florida.

Still not a perfect ending, necessarily, but it'd be way better than what we got.
