Boehner stops being Speaker, or both?

    •  Yeah, I don't know how the GOP survives this (9+ / 0-)

I think they have to shut down the government, and they may even have to default on the debt, just because they've boxed themselves into both those positions.  I also think they're going to pay a huge price at the polls if they do either one of those things, and there are plenty of GOP House members who know it.

I expect a number of them to break with the party and vote with the Dems to reopen the govt and to lift the debt ceiling.  I hope they agree to elect a new Speaker in coalition with the Dems.

Too much inertia. Too many billionaires, rednecks, and fundies propping them up.

        •  This is exactly right ... (0+ / 0-)

... and I cannot say it often enough.

As long as their are shameless billionaires and soulless corporations that can make money by disrupting our government then there will always be this strain of conservatism.  This will never stop.  We must work our resistance into our lifestyle instead of something that we pick up whenever we get enraged enough.

Please do not be alarmed. We are about to engage... the nozzle.

If a very small group of Rs are willing to put country over party (yes, it doesn't seem at all likely), we could get a coalition Speaker and move forward. It would be a sunny development that would have seismic effects.

I'm from the Elizabeth Warren wing of the Democratic Party
