  •  There's a group called the Rescue Rangers (10+ / 0-)

that manages it, volunteers within the community.

Basically someone from their group reads every single diary posted on the site. They assign shifts.

They have a set of criteria they use to find diaries to feature. They won't feature a diary with a lot of comments, or one that hits the Recommended list. They have other internal criteria as well. They are basically looking for interesting diaries that appear to have been overlooked by the community that should get a wider audience.

    •  Nice summation elfling. (11+ / 0-)

For a little history, I would just add that Community Spotlight grew out of an older feature on Daily Kos that was called Diary Rescue. Longtime Kossacks may remember that Diary Rescue was originally started by then "SusanG" now Susan Garner, the executive editor of Daily Kos and a longtime front pager.

Susan originally wanted to mitigate the instance of lesser known diarists who wrote well, but didn't get an audience. She began to "rescue" these diaries by collecting up the links and writing a small blurb about each one. This would be posted in a front page story that appeared each night. At that time there was no Community Spotlight and readers would click through to the diaries linked in the Diary Rescue thread.

Eventually as the site grew, Susan asked for help with this task. First during "Yearly Kos" (what is now Netroots Nation) and the on a regular basis. The people that began helping were soon called the Rescue Rangers. The rangers eventually took over 6 nights a week and Susan continued to do Saturday nights.

With the advent of DK4, site management decided to create the Community Spotlight and asked the Rescue Rangers to feed their finds into that instead. It was a big change, since instead of posting a front page story once a day, we now update the Community Spotlight continuously.

On a personal note, I've been involved in Diary Rescue since right around the end of 2006 or the beginning of 2007 (that's as best as memory serves!).  For me, the best part of the job is being able to provide encouragement and thanks to new or lesser known diarists, so they will continue to write. That was one of the founding goals of Diary Rescue.

Every Ranger probably has their own reasons for rescuing, but all share a love of finding good quality writing - which also maintains the original vision of Susan Gardner.
