  •  GOP arguments in general depend upon.... (28+ / 0-) uninformed electorate.  Their base consists of millions of low information (or Fox News "misinformation") voters.

    •  And a stop order on reality checks. (6+ / 0-)

The Republicans depend on people assuming that the media is liberally biased. If they can get their voters to assume that there's something worse out there that the media isn't telling us, it's easier for them to get away with such lies.

If course, the lie depends on people not asking why does the GOP produce so much ammunition for this supposedly hostile media. I have no more contempt for the Republican rank and file than their owl leaders do.

off from contact with anyone outside the cult.

It's the first move in a divide-and-conquer strategy:

"THEY don't really care about you, WE care about you, WE won't lie to you like THEY do, WE won't leave you alone and confused, WE LOVE you, stay here with US, you'll always have a place here with US, don't listen to THEM, THEY only want to hurt you...."

Now, manufacture a wholly fictional "them" on which to project every vice, every moral failing, every craven lack, every alienating and dehumanizing insult, outrage, and othering technique imaginable;  as long as they stay where you can work on them (even talk-radio instead of muzak in the office will office)  the 'message' will be hammered home & continually reinforced, that the despicable, morally-bankrupt Imaginary Liberal (tm) HATES YOU, HATES AMERICA, hates dogs, puppies, Jesus, 'sportsmen', and "honest business-owners like you" and everything that makes Our way of life the BEST and should be put down like dogs before they do any more damage.

Once you've disqualified every other source of opinion, and they've become a captive-but-entirely-voluntary audience, you can begin to twist things, warp the common meaning of things, shame them into keeping any doubts to themselves.

At that point, describing them as "uninformed"  completely mistakes the scope of the catastrophe:  their opinions have been terraformed, their minds have been colonized (which is, BTW, how they all manage to sound alike - very much akin to the way modern "bible-study works).  At this point, they have become the concerned citizen who can no longer get along with the family at holidays, speaking a specialized jargon that SOUNDS just like real language but derails chats that MIGHT have informed them otherwise....

This very much recalls hanna's bit about the favorite targets of liars....
