    Social Work Practice said this:

    The Invisible Veil

Since people are all products of cultural conditioning, their values and beliefs (worldviews) represent an invisible veil that operates outside the level of conscious awareness.  As a result, people assume universality: that regardless of race, culture, ethnicity, or gender, everyone shares the nature of reality and truth.  Racism, sexism, and homophobia may be both conscious (intentional) and unconscious (unintentional). It is the latter form that may ultimately be the most insidious and dangerous.  Well-intentioned individuals who consider themselves moral, decent, and fair-minded may have the greatest difficulty in understanding how their belief systems and actions may be biased and prejudiced.
Misinformation related to culturally diverse groups (I'll add political groups) is imposed through a painful process of social conditioning; all of us were taught to hate and fear others who are different in some way. Likewise, because all of us live play and work within organizations, those policies, practices, and structures that may be less than fair to minority groups are invisible in controlling our lives.  Perhaps the greatest obstacle to a meaningful movement toward a multicultural society (I'll add just society) is our failure to understand our unconscious and unintentional complicity in perpetuating bias and discrimination via our personal values/beliefs and our institutions. The power of racism, sexism, and homophobia is related to the invisibility of the powerful forces that control and dictate our lives.  In a strange sort of way, we are all victims.  Minority groups are victims of oppression.  Majority group members are victims who are unwittingly socialized into the role of the oppressor.   (Sue, 2004, 2005)

    •  That is interesting but I think when people (2+ / 0-)

grow up and shake off as much BS that was filtered into their brains and travel and actually have some kind of normal childhood then develop their own brains and circumstances that befall them  and mold them.   A survival mechanism of sorts with good judgement skills to basically Know right from wrong and in my case I know I did not shed all of my christian values ( the real ones) The be attitude scriptures.. The Matthew 25 scriptures...and some help from something bigger than me has taken me beyond the prejudices.....  In other words..FOR ME..being right with a great spirit is more than being right with the Kewl kids.   I believe what I don't do  will damn me as quick as what the fundies scream about  saying it is what  people do.  It is about our inaction or ommission as well as commission of deeds... FOR ME.. I cannot or would not judge anyone else.. Above my pay grade but I would encourage people to get beyond themselves and look deeper.

from wrong, just and unjust.  That is why there are people like you, me and those at Kos and other websites and communities reaching out and insisting on critical thinking without bias.  Unfortunately there are many intelligent people in the higher social order who do not have the functioning ability to use common sense, which is widely underestimated.  The mind is incredible, and unfortunately those who are in control are aware of its weaknesses and use it to their advantage in order to keep the status quo.  In our society they provide us with "FREEDOM." This freedom represents one thing; the freedom to consume and buy every crap of "WANTS" feeding our present emotional needs, blinding us of the beauty of humanity and all that entails to produce such a society which could provide them with all the wants at a lower or no cost.  But if you tell them that, the Lazy Non-Worker theory kicks in before humanity begins to tinker in their brains.

It will take another 300 years before we rid ourselves of hunger in this country alone.
