If you own or use a gun illegally, you are breaking the law.  It doesn't matter whether you think you have good reason to break the law, you are still breaking the law.

Lots of people speed on the highways.  A lot of these law-breakers do so because they think they have a good reason: they are late; they have an important date to keep; their job depends on it; etc.  Should these people ignore the posted speed limits and be excused the need to register and inspect their cars?  Of course not.

Let's say an old, frail guy lives in a crime-ridden neighborhood.  He buys himself a gun - for self-protection - but skips registering the gun with police as required by law.  And if criminals break into his home is the proper thing for him to do is to shoot them using his illegal gun?  No!  The proper thing for him to do is to register his gun today with authorities ASAP so that he can use it legally should the need arise.

Your suggest that gun owners be excused from following the law is to give permission to ALL gun owners to treat ALL gun regulations as option ("I don't have to register my gun, or get a license because when I use my gun it is going to be for self-defense").  This clearly is a very bad idea.

Keep in mind that except for a small few (the psychopathic criminals and terrorists), everyone who points a gun at another human will claim that they only do so for self-defense.  Indeed, the majority of criminals who have been found guilty of using a gun during the course of a criminal incident claim that they only pulled the gun out to protect themselves.  This subjective aspect to a claim of "defensive gun use" is at the heart of the difficulty in accurately counting true and valid DGUs.
