  •  And Patrick Leahy is still the only Democrat (0+ / 0-)

to be elected to the US Senate from Vermont.

    •  Vermont started to become competitive though (0+ / 0-)

in the 1980s. In 1980, it was the only state in the nation where Ronald Reagan did worse than Gerald Ford in 1976. Michael Dukakis got about 47.5% of the vote and put Vermont on his "18 State Strategy" board.

      •  Leahy almost lost in 1980 (0+ / 0-)

He won by 2,755 votes -- 49.82% to 48.50%. I think it was the closest Senate election that year.

He had only won in 1974 by 4,406 votes -- 49.48% to 46.39%. A third party candidate named Bernie Sanders -- yup, that Bernie Sanders -- got 5,901 votes. Sanders has never been a Democrat and in any other year would likely have been the spoiler.

Sanders would finally win big in 1986.

    •  Well if you discount Sanders then Yeah (0+ / 0-)

but Sanders is to the LEFT of Leahy and he's been voted in twice.  So technically you are correct but in actuality Vermont has recently shown a penchant for voting in candidate who are from the left of our political spectrum.
