    Not only that but he kept Jefferson Davis as Secretary of War up to the very end allowing Davis to shift arms and material to where Confereate forces cold take them over easily. He monkeywrenched the War Department to where it took them years to make it right.
    Davis should have been hung for treason

      Jefferson Davis was Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce, 1853-1857.

      When Buchanan was elected, Davis resigned and was named Senator again from Mississippi.

      Secretary of War under Buchanan (until the Fort Sumter Crisis) was John B. Floyd (who was a very sloppy administrator, so sloppy in fact, that whether in 1859 and 1860 he was "running guns to Southerners" or was even aware it was happening, is a very open question.)
          But in any case it was NOT Jefferson Davis.
