  •  i still hate saying this but I still see (6+ / 0-)

history being rather kind to Dubya, or at least middling to average. Which is kinder than he deserves.

    •  Why? (4+ / 0-)

      A false war in Iraq?

Deregulating securities to the point of international economic collapse?

Leaving thousands to wallow in sewage after Katrina?

Looking the other way when faced with a pile of national security intel showing we were on the precipice of attack, then pivoting away from capturing the culprits in order to settle old scores and foment a failed neo-con ideology.

      Yea, history will be kind.

      •  we liberals insist that this will happen. (1+ / 0-)

I don't see it happening. Even Nixon's come up in recent years.

Bush more or less not being in the public eye at all these last few years is what will help him. I'll check back in 30 years though.

may save his reputation.  It was a wise move to save the automakers, and probably the right course to bail out the banks at the time.  His response will at least guarantee he stays out of any "worst president" lists.

The wars and fiscal mismanagement are going to look worse in history, though.  Going from surplus to deficit will be a stark change to historians, as will his failure to bring OBL to justice despite starting two expensive wars that did not advance US interests.  Hopefully that's enough to put Dubya in the "below average" area of presidential rankings.

    •  I think he'll be one of those ... (0+ / 0-)

... that slowly sinks downward over time. But, yes, just being a two-termer will keep him out of the worst-of-the-worst, the reasoning being that he sufficiently represented the zeitgeist of the nation to win reelection in 2004. Even Nixon gets the nod on that score.

      •  GWB will also get creds for his handling of 911 (0+ / 0-)

Every year on 9-11, they replay those scenes of GWB standing on the rubble with the megaphone.  That was a powerful image.  Also, on the next major anniversary, he'll be more free to give interviews on 9-11.  Those will be presented sympathetically.  His wife is well thought of also,...this never hurts.

Also, a lot of what he did is viewed as positive by 50% of the people (his tax cuts were popular, his justices are not as poorly thought of as liberals think they are, Afghanistan was a success, etc.).

Sorry, but GWB will NEVER be at the bottom of any of these lists.
