  •  A pity the Vampire essence has been so degraded (6+ / 0-)

in modern treatments. (Although I did enjoy Buffy and Angel.)

Thinking of the 'properties' of a vampire, it made such a perfect metaphor for the difference between the false self and the truly human self.

    • Can't reflect.
    • Can't cross running water (always a symbol of emotion)
    • Doesn't have its own real life, but exists on the life of another.
    • Must be invited in.
    • Can't live in sunlight.
    • Turns insubstantial as a mist; turns into wolves and bats while having sway over rats and flies: all against human interests in popular lore

The saddest thing about today's vampire (or should I say "scampire"?) is that the real horror of Dracula was moral. No longer.

All the skin-crawling revolved, in the older tellings, around this absolutely heartless predator in a human form. Who then made others to be like himself.

As to the original Dracula: a friend pointed out to me that you could look at the composition of each frame and see it as a classical painting. You can see it especially in Lugosi on the stairs. I think that's a large part of its artistic power.
