This crisis is young yet.  Give it time, and after it gets really tough to hang tough, then let's do whatever back-patting is in order.

I suspect it's going to get tough in two ways.

The shutdown is going to last a while, maybe a good long while.  The '95 and '96 shutdowns were brief because the Rs were led into them by Gingrich, who had a plan on what he wanted to accomplish by using this tactic, and then ended the shutdown as soon as it became clear that the plan wasn't working.  They don't have leadership now that is capable of keeping their troops from doing something no rational person has planned.  The R crazies didn't follow Boehner in staying on the sane side of the shutdown line, why would anyone think they'll let Boehner lead them back to sanity and end the shutdown?

How long?  I don't think it at all unreasonable to imagine that it won't end as long as the Rs control the House.  It either ends by electoral ouster -- not until January 2015! -- or it ends by 17+ Rs defecting to our side and reorganizing the House under new leadership.

Secondly, it's not just the sheer length of shutdown we're likely to see that will be tough to tough out, it's the tricks they're bound to pull.  Already we have folks -- on our side! -- in the Senate putting up a bill to rescue the military, to keep their pay coming during a shutdown.  That's the model for how they'll win.  They will put up rescue bill after rescue bill to restore funding to this or that program, but only programs they want to continue.  Our legislators will be sorely tempted to vote for such rescue, because we aren't sociopaths, we will want to jump at every opportunity to stop however much of the senseless destruction as possible.  But if we give in to this temptation, they will quickly have what they want, spending they don't like defunded forever, because we've let all the hostages they value go free in rescue bills that restored their funding, but their funding only.  The troops will be paid, but at the price of ending the EPA, DOE, HUD, food stamps -- and the ACA.

    The states must be abolished.
