Obama is finished if he caves on ACA defunding and he well knows it. Republicans, however, are really screwed and Democrats know that too. The GOP have backed themselves into a corner they can't get out of without the help of Democrats. Let's just hope that Dems don't throw them a lifeline in the form of Social Security cuts.

My fear is that the Dems will hold on Obamacare and birth control but cave on other things on the Pub laundry list. The Dems need to refuse to negotiate at all, or there will never be an end to this hostage taking until the Pubs are in power.

Watch as the Right pulls the ol' bait-n-switch by taking ACA opposition off the table and subsituting with Social Security cuts or the like. This WILL happen and all the press will glow about how the Right has backed off and offered a reasonable compromise.

Make no mistake -- the Right KNOWS the ACA is law and won't be repealed. This action is ALL about getting the Administration to gut other programs and the President has already shown willingness to "reform" Social Security.

        •  Well, the tables should just be turned then (0+ / 0-)

Dems will allow Republicans to save some face.  The House will eventually vote on a clean CR that funds the government for a limited amount of time and in return the Dems will agree to negotiate on a longer term CR when this CR expires.

The Repubs will then have their starting negotiating point and the Dems will have theirs.  I suggest they do a "Contract with America" type tactic.  Take the top 10 issues where the American public favors your position over the Repubs and then push for those.

Go for a stimulus plan and make it revenue neutral with a small tax increase on the top 1 percent.  Take your top 3 gun issues that were defeated but have broad popular support.  Take your most popular "green" initiatives, etc, etc.  I don't know what the top 10 issues would be but if the Republicans are going to have a list of their fantasies, the Dems should be prepared to counter with their most highly popular ideas that have been stymied by a Repub controlled House.   While I wouldn't expect much of it to get passed, it is unlikely that the Repubs would get any of their wish list either but by picking the most popular elements of the Dem platform that also increases jobs and peels away some Repubs and independents by making it revenue neutral, you might actually be in a strong enough position to "win" that fight.  Especially with the Repubs wounded after this self-inflicted wound due to the shutdown.
