but, this is just a symptom of gentrification. The poor will lose. the city should be ashamed of itself but....

mid '80s. I have spent a lot of time in the Tenderloin, particularly when I was young. I had friends who lived in that creepy green hostel down there, which was pretty much a shooting gallery back then. Turk is the nexus of it, same as it ever was.

There isn't another part of SF that's ever matched it for me. SF beats the worst parts of NY any day too... I've spent my time all around NY as well. Nothing beats the shit I've seen in the tenderloin, period. I think it goes back to the 1960's.

      •  Huh? (4+ / 0-)

Wow - I was down there last week - my boss was hunting down a really good Pakistani restaurant in the area - Pakwan.  I tagged along and we had a great dinner - tandoori to die for, an amazing red curry lamb, excellent (and huge) naan.

No hassles, no one accosting us.  Yeah, kind of seedy in places, but I guess my experience of shitholes might be a bit more gritty than yours.

so I'm not sure where you are. I see a Pakwan in the Mission at 16th. We're talking about the heart of the Tenderloin?

          •  i have eaten at pakwan over a hundred times easily (0+ / 0-)

it is in the mission (16th between valencia and guerrero.  awesome indian.  nothing unsafe about that neighborhood.

there are several awesome indian places in the TL, but the one i recall was Naan and Curry; which has awesome tandoori and a second location on Polk headed towards the Marina.

TL has a lot of open drug use and I had someone try to throw a stick thru my spokes when biking through, but it's a very small area.

(sadly i moved from SF to NY a little over a year ago and getting ready to move into Brooklyn this week.  i really miss the food; indian, mexican and sushi especally.  viva la difference!!)

      •  You Mean 1860's (3+ / 0-)

The TL has been an unsavory part of the city for a long time. Lived there in the mid 1960's and it was bad then. I guess you never went to the Fillmore District or Hunters Point. I lived in those areas too and they were worse.  I imagine every large city has similar areas. Even "bad" people need someplace to live.

I'm a NY'er. I've been around. I've definitely been to Fillmore and Hunter's Point (and Lower Haight, and the Mission pre-gentrification as well). I've also spent my time in North Manhattan and Queens a fair amount, and plenty in some sketchier parts of LA. I don't think any of these were on par with like two blocks of Turk Street in SF, where I've been mugged at gun point, hit up aggressively for sex, spit on, felt up, had bottles thrown at my car, and spent time in a freaking shooting gallery (not by choice). Just what it is. Just my perception. I avoid it, categorically, in a way that I wouldn't other areas of any of these cities, all of which I've often had much fun in.
