to send vets from WWII to Washington ... including nonrefundable reservations ... have been trashed by the shutdown. Meanwhile Randy "Baby Killer!" Neugebauer gleefully claims this is good for the economy,
good for the country, and good for our souls.

The Gee O Pee deserves nothing different than the 11SEP01 hijackers.

    •  Yes, but it doesn't have to be that way (1+ / 0-)

Seriously, have YOU ever been to the WW2 memorial?

And if so, can you with all seriousity and a straight face make the case that aged WW2 vets could not safely and responsibly visit the site w/o federal chaperones?

Especially on the very first day long before maintenance has totally gone to shit?

should be on the site if there's a limited security presence. The monuments could be defaced, the grounds damaged, people injured. Even if such outcomes are regarded as unlikely, in today's litigious society such a risk is not warranted. Yes shutting down the Mall is an outrage, since we all paid for it's upkeep and should all enjoy it's use whenever we're in town. That's part of our legacy as citizens. That's what the GOP is trampling on, in their joy to pull the plug on everything they regard as a "free ride." This stunt was the GOPs attempt to make lemonade out of lemons once one of these idiots realized the timing of the veteran's trip. There's no question they picked this day for the shut down to coincide with the opening of the healthcare exchange registration.

        •  I agree with most of your comment, but... (0+ / 0-)

...it happened today because this is the first day of the fiscal year,  and that's when the previously approved appropriations ran out.

disability. Out in the open, if I make a misstep and the knee goes out, I'm down -- not just hobbled, but down -- without help.

I cannot imagine risking fragile 70-+-year-old vets that way.

It shocks me, the things people take for granted sometimes.

An ordinary slip-and-fall can be fatal without trained staff on hand.
