      •  But usually it wouldn't be the last character (1+ / 0-)

in a legit tag, I'm not thinking.

You wouldn't have a tag Wall St. -- it would be Wall Street

St. Louis has the period in the middle.

        etc.

        •   Well.... (0+ / 0-)

Tag for PA Governor race, abbreviated to PA Gov.

Just about any abbreviation could end up being the tail of a tag.

It's been quite a while for me, but dealing with string variables at the input level usually has a 'strip leading and trailing white space' function as part of the fundamental error-checking of the data being input.

((lurkers, that means that if someone punches in extra space before and after a single word, the computer needs to be told to take away the extra spaces from "   Cat   " so that it is three letters wide in the computer memory rather than the nine that someone put in the text box. Because if you don't tell it the difference, a computer will think "Cat" and "   Cat   " are two different words.))

I'm aware that nowadays all that stuff is usually just included in some standard input output code library, but at some level the option is there. And better news is that the white space eliminator likely isn't being used all that much, as the leading and trailing white space is preserved in the raw subject line of this comment:
          "                                   Well....       "

So... If the trailing period is a problem just add a line that strips it and any whitespace from all tags as they are entered, and start using it. It's your car, drive the thing.

            Correct form is just PA-Gov

Yes, absolutely we can strip an ending period, just hadn't occurred to me to do so before, so I was curious to see if anyone had a reason we shouldn't. We do already strip whitespace from new tags.

Little, Big, where somebody is trying to debug the software for laying out telephone books. The Fourth St. Bar turns out to be the Fourth Saint Bar, and the Church of All Sts. turns out to be the Church of All Streets. Also fairies, architecture, magic technology, and wishes being granted. Tricky, that.
