There is virtually no competition in Northern CA(Aetna dropped out of the market for self employed individuals), and I will be paying about $150 more PER MONTH(about $1,800 more per year than I am paying now) for a much, much crappier policy( now I have to pay 40% of all care after I meet my deductible which went up almost $2,000).

Premiums alone will cost me over $6,000.

I wonder why the State of CA is allowing such a huge rate increase?  Why is this legal?

Since I don't qualify for subsidies, I am really getting screwed.  Thanks, Rethugs, for fighting single payer and handing over huge profits to Kaiser since they just about the only game in town.

    •  Wait - is this on the exchange? (0+ / 0-)

This is the first news I've heard of premiums going up for people on the exchange.

      •  based on my estimates (0+ / 0-)

it'll be $800 or $1000/month for bronze or silver with Kaiser for me.

Don't have anything to compare it to as we get healthcare at Kaiser through my wife currently.

It's around what I was expecting.

      •  I've had Kaiser for four years... (0+ / 0-)

The rates have averaged a 20% increase every year, but a 40% premium rate increase(along with the much higher deductible and out of pocket expenses expected)is really outrageous.  The least expensive plan on the exchange is still $500 per month(Anthem Blue Cross) which is still a lot more than I am paying now.

I really don't see how this is benefiting anyone but the insurance companies if you don't qualify for subsidies.  I was really excited about the ACA being implemented.  Now I see that I am getting royally screwed because there is no competition.

            •  Age? (0+ / 0-)

(trying to get an idea of how they price things)

              •  I am 57 (0+ / 0-)

The only difference I can see with ACA and Kaiser(other than the outrageous premium increase) is that they don't charge me more because I am a woman (which is what they used to do)....now EVERYBODY pays through the teeth at the same amount.

I've never even met my deductible until last year, so they were making plenty of money on my high premiums for years.

Just to be informed:  Kaiser says that the preventive care check up is free: but if you have a diagnosis, they will charge you many hundreds of dollars for that visit. I learned that the hard way when I showed up for my check up and the doctor diagnosed a sports injury.  To be fair, I fought the charges and won, but that is probably not the usual outcome.  Make sure you are 100% healthy for your check up(what a scam!)
