One of the many irreplaceable things I lost when my mother passed was a direct pipeline to the nineteenth century -- not because she was born then, but because she was always coming out with expressions that her mother used to say.  Just a few days before she passed she used one I had never heard before, and I've kicked myself ever since for not writing it down straight away.

those expressions, my mother would start out with "as my mother used to say" or 'as my father used to say". Most of the earthier comments came from my grandfather.

As my mom said when I asked her what my grandmother was like (she died when I was a baby so I never knew her), her first response was 'she wouldn't say shit if she had a mouthful'.
