I am one of several contractors working on a project at a major US corporation in Texas.  The corporate workers all have very good health insurance.

The contractors have varying health coverage -- from none, to pretty good coverage, once you have worked 90 days.

In our discussion, I mentioned that I was uninsurable because of a prior condition. Half of the women contractors at the table chimed in that they too were uninsurable.

My colleague insider with company insurance said, "Well that's why the state provides high -risk insurance".

I explained to him that the the monthly premium was $900, two years ago, and the policy had a $5,000/yr deductible.  That's more than my mortgage payment! I would have to pay, out-of-pocket $15,800/year before I would derive any benefits from such a policy. Then, you have copays, etc.

I asked him if he thought that was a good deal. Crickets...

We are the principled ones, remember? We don't get to use the black hats' tricks even when it would benefit us. Political Compass: -6.88, -6.41
