Whenever you have something as cataclysmic as a hard shutdown would create it's not the wealthy elite who suffer the most, but people at the other end of the income pyramid.

We're already suffering and yeah, we'd suffer most from a hard shutdown.

But the point of a hard shutdown is to get the rich to feel anything at all.  I'm betting like the princess and the pea, they won't tolerate any disruption - no matter how petty - to the 24-hour ego orgy they call life.

Then what can we do to get the rich to stop taking us for all we're worth and killing us when there's nothing left to take?

You make it sound like Ahab should've just let the whale have his leg, deal with the pain and reduced mobility, and be grateful that such a magnificent beast so far beyond him and his petty notions of justice didn't take all that it could have taken.  We're getting to the point where we have nothing left to lose; either we starve in the midst of riches that our labor produced or we starve because we blew it all up out of spite.

There's a saying about guerrilla warfare: "Victory will go not to those who can inflict the most, but those who can endure the most."  But if, as you say, it is the rich who can endure the most - who can decamp to the countryside to escape the plague and amuse themselves while bodies already bent and withered by labor and hunger fill the filthy streets - then they truly are destined to enslave us forever.

Domestic politics is the continuation of civil war by other means.

          •  For the really rich it is very common for them (0+ / 0-)

to have homes and assets in several countries and numerous currencies for specifically this type of situation. If life in the US is going to be cumbersome for the next few months, they just fly to another country where they have a home and staff ready to make life comfortable.

Fuck up one country, then when the peasants get angry and desperate, fly away in majesty like gods to a new land where there's still meat and fat on the bones.  Which I'm sure they believe exists entirely for them to feast upon.

The only satisfaction might be in seeing their retainers get left behind.  "My Lord, I don't understand ... we did it all for you!  Why are you leaving us?!"  But that's always what happens in the movies: the minions always get killed when they're no longer of any use.
