  •  In my early teen years, the radio was flooded (9+ / 0-)

with Elvis and Frankie, which I fortunately outgrew by 14. At that time I received Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste in the mail instead of a Beethoven record, and I was instantly converted.

That opened my ears to contemporary and jazz as options to the pop I was beginning to find noxious. And I learned that it was rhythm and blues that I liked better than the sexed-up Elvis twistings.

I never spend much time digging for past memories, so I don't recall station call letters or names.

It's full foliage season around here now.

So long as the bourgeoisie control the cultural institutions which define social reality, they will set the basic rules of debate and thereby control the range of possible outcomes. ~ Antonio Gramsci
