      We drove over to Middlesboro, KY several times during the restoration. I regret I was not able to be there when Steve Hinton flew it the first time after it was restored. Lt. Harry Smith, the pilot who flew it, passed away some time ago, but there is one surviving member of that squadron who came. The old man cried when he saw it fly again. The last time he saw that P-38 fly was in 1943.

      The Smithsonian Air & Space magazine has the story.
