Shutting down the WW2 memorial makes the President look bad.  There is nothing to shut, it just sits out in the open.  No special entrance, nothing to close.  It would be like shutting the Vietnam memorial - it just sits out in the open.  Proactively setting up baricades and keeping veterans away looks like a cheap ploy designed to manufacture public opinion.

the WWII memorial is not just a hunk of granite magically immune from everything. It is a very public owned piece of real estate in a very public owned part of a very public owned national capital city.

It needs upkeep. It needs maintenance. It needs protection from...vandals, vagrants, potential terrorists, foreign and domestic... It needs park rangers for a variety of needs, from interpretation to upkeep. Without them, it's at the mercy of any yahoo wandering around who could damage it for any number of reasons.

IT IS A UNIT OF THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. There are 401 of them in this country. They are all owned by the same entity. You don't just shut one down. They ALL get shut down. It's not "lets keep the WWII memorial open becuase it's all about flag waving and old glory and blah blah blah. But forget the rest of the others." It doesn't work that way. It just doesn't.

Why is this so hard for people to understand? IF YOU SHUT THE FUCKING FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOWN, THEY ALL GET SHUT DOWN. PERIOD. Sorry, I don't mean to be rude at you. I know alot of people might not be able to make the connection at first. I can, because I'm such an NPS enthusiast. I am just so at my wits end about this whole thing, I have trouble being rational about it. I can't decide if Michelle Bachmann, Steve King, etc. are stupid or just so used to lying that they think they can pull this over on anyone with an IQ over 25. THEY are, of course, the real sources of my ire.

The WWII memorial is a great thing: A memorial to those who valiantly fought fascism in the 20th century. When this stupid episode is done, I want a new memorial: One to commemorate how we fought this act of fascism in the 21st century! Any ideas?

I am aware the memorial needs maintenance, et al.  But, the nature of the Mall in Washington DC is that much of what is there is wide open.  To close the WW2 Memorial takes MORE work than to leave it open.

Just like when the NPS shuts down the colonial farm in McLean, VA.  The NPS hasn't operated that farm since 1980.  The farm leases the land from the NPS and it runs entirely on donated funds, administered by private staff.  Yet, the NPS ordered it shut down when day to day operations have nothing to do with the Fed'l gov't and NOT ONE federal worker provides day to day services.

The situation is serious enough on its own, it doesn't need to be pumped up.  By taking actions that are viewed by the public as trying to exploit a crisis the Administration inadvertantly risks losing support by doing things that are viewed as cheap theatrics.  This is a situation that is serious, by taking unnecessary actions beyond what is actually required the President risks losing public support.
