  •  Soviet Generals feared Reagan's majesty (3+ / 0-)

By the time of Reagan, the Soviet generals of World War II were just fading away, and some still remained in positions of power.  These were the generals who defeated Nazi Germany in thee most brutal fighting probably in all history.  And yet, this crusty, tough motherfuckers just rolled over and gave up seeing as they were being outspent.

And they just had to be in awe as Reagan turned tail after the 1983 Marine barracks suicide bombing.  Yes, those generals who saw literally millions die, just gave up after seeing Reagan's military majesty.

Chamlers Johnson in 2010 had the right ideas it seemed.  In a  the radio interview below, he said the US did not win the Cold War.  Rather, the Soviet Union lost first with the US following later as the same forces that broke up the Soviet Union are acting on the American Empire.

    •  Yes, behold the terrifying majesty of Raygun! (5+ / 0-)

A few years ago I took a class on the collapse of the USSR and another on modern US-Russia relations. Both taught by a guy named Herspring, who had spent decades in the Navy and working for the State Dept. After the fall of the USSR he served as a diplomatic liaison to the military. The man is on a first name basis with dozens of Russian generals, admirals and politicians.

He had a lot of pretty entertaining stories, but one he told a few times involved the Soviet military's "fear" of Reagan. Only thing they were afraid of was his senile ass waking up one day and deciding, "Yup, today's a good day for a nuclear apocalypse." Just nuking half the world because he wasn't exactly firing on all cylinders anymore.

that Reagan's bluster actually propped up the collapsing regime a few more years (or months, maybe) - the generals could point to him & say "Watch out, he's a mad man!" & work a few more rubles out of the politburo

      •  Well, if I'd heard him give this speech... (1+ / 0-)

I would have been terrified of his "senile ass", too! Terrifying majesty, indeed.

He said virtually the same thing in a press conference about a year later, after speaking privately with Gorbachev.

Can you imagine how Gorbachev reacted to Reagan's longing for an alien invasion? It would be terrifying to realize that your foreign counterpart was off his rocker.
