They laughed because "they’ve heard this song and dance so many times before," and not because they are philosophically opposed to a grand bargain.

The Obama team has been willing to strike a grand bargain many time before... only to have Republicans refuse. It was Republicans who blocked the grand bargain, not Democrats.

Now Republicans are backed up against a wall, and they see they're not going to get ACA repealed or even delayed. They need a way to save face. Obama might be willing to give it to them. (He too wants to end the government shutdown, after all.)

    I find this very alarming.

This is not to argue, as one recent diary implied, that getting a grand bargain was the Republicans' plan all along. That was convincingly rebutted in another rec listed diary. But just because Republicans were not aiming for a grand bargain all along, does not mean they won't accept it as a fallback position.

The White House team seems to have laughed only because Boehner as so often pull the football away, Lucy-style, at the last minute. Not because they oppose it.
