    we may have taken a fatal turn with agriculturally based civilizations with hierarchy and dense population growth.

    but it may be that agriculture developed in a particular way under patriarchy.

      Didn't the Sumerians have city-states?  At any rate, there was a rather significant environmental change in Europe and Africa with the expansion of the Roman Empire (for instance) -- forests were cut to make way for farmland and species went out of business.
