and I think you are correct. It would move the GOP towards the center and improve their prospects as a party for 2014 and beyond.

My fear is that Boehner feels compelled to play his last card, not increasing the debt ceiling, before he would even consider such a move.

    •  That fear is probably unfounded (0+ / 0-)

We can predict the fallout from shutting the government down.  We control most of those effects ourselves.  No one can predict what will happen if we forcibly default upon our obligations.

I have tried to imagine it's consequences in sequential order, but there are so many moving pieces it hurts my head, and I've put it off for much easier analyses.  Some questions that beget more data, are what will Moody's do?  What will China do?  What will Europe do?

All it takes is one nation to divest itself of its American holdings, to drop the price out of the safe zone to where computer driven panic ensues.
I feel confident that everyone except the 80 knows this.

isn't raised the President, Treasury Secretary and Fed Chairman will execute a plan to redeem the maturing Treasury securities and pay the interest on a timely basis. Lots of other bills won't get paid, but I don't think they will let the US default on Treasury notes and bonds. I just don't believe it will happen.
