  •  Yes, we always wish there could be a happy ending (6+ / 0-)

But people have to understand that when responding to a situation like that they don't have the luxury of assuming she's just probably just mentally ill and doesn't really want to hurt anyone.  If she had driven off and mowed down 10 tourists,  even if unintentionally, her mental illness would be cold comfort.

    It's a sad ending but I don't fault these police/secret service.

There was no way for law enforcement to establish that the driver was not a deranged car bomber looking to get the vehicle close to a suitable target until they were able to open the trunk and search the car. They unfortunately weren't able to do that until the driver was dead. She resisted arrest multiple times.

The reckless driving was a hazard to a handful of law enforcement and innocent pedestrians. The threat that DC law enforcement has to assume is that someone is trying to make a statement by killing dozens or hundreds.

You know, if a pilot flies an airplane anywhere within 35 miles of DC without proper credentials and refuses to stop, they can expect to be shot down. It doesn't matter if he's flying straight and level from Pennsylvania to North Carolina at 10,000 feet. But then again, people with a history of mental illness generally don't get to fly airplanes.
