  •  You are spot on - context & intent still matter (8+ / 0-)

A group of athletes walking down the street, or showing up after church for the softball league, carrying bags of bats, and no one looks sideways.

A group of business men in golf clothes each carrying a bag of golf clubs is no cause for alarm.

Should a group of protesters anywhere EVER show up each carrying a golf club?

    •  There is a good chance that the police (5+ / 0-)

would make people leave their clubs in the car or leave them with security. There is a context for everything. I walked into our local police station with a shotgun once, and I am not law enforcement, but it was perfectly OK. I had an old gun I wanted to get rid off, and I called the police to find out how to get rid of it, and he was there to meet me at the door, and was carrying it by the stock as not to be threatening. Now if I just showed up with it one day hoping to get rid of it, I probably would have had police running at me from all directions. And who could blame them?

One of the exemptions in the law from the prohibition against public carry without a permit is surrendering your gun to the authorities. And yes, I think it would be wise to call the police and tell them you are bringing in your gun, rather than risk something happening and getting arrested.

That is Maryland's CCW "good cause" law and it's cert petition is SCOTUS conference today! Although I'm not quite sure what that means, exactly. My understanding is that in about 3 weeks or so we will know whether SCOTUS accepts or declines the case. We will publish a diary on the law and the petition on Monday.

        But I digress.
