I think deal-making is alive and well among the sane members of Congress, who have the best interests of the entire country at heart.  Unfortunately, most of the people who used to be the Republicans back in the day who were among that number have either wound up in the Democratic party, or were simply driven out of office.

The only Republicans who still are sane enough to deal have no power over the lunatic idealogues who simply want government destroyed.

We are so obsessed with TeaBaggers and their supposed power in Gubmint (even though we control the Senate and Executive and even SOTUS has gone our way recently) that we just throw up our hands and say "I will not negotiate".

That's not leading.  That's not advancing the agenda.

It's just digging in and in the end being as recalcitrant and intractable.

      Ergo, gridlock.

Maybe the President should exercise his real power and sway the opposition to his will?  Maybe he should talk to someone besides his staff?

It takes two don't y'a know.

      •  Let's say you want to have dinner. (2+ / 0-)

The person you're going to have dinner with insists not only that you pick up the tab, but that the menu is rotten, fly-infested meat.

No matter how often you offer to pick up the tab as long as you instead eat something that simply won't make you sick, the other person insists you must eat garbage.

Are you going to keep 'negotiating', or simply throw up your hands and wait for them to get hungry?

Among 46 members of the Senate and 232 members of the House.  The only ones the President could invite to a putrid dinner is Boenher, Cantor, Cruz and Lee?

There are no chairman of key committees?  There are no senior members with influence?  There's no Repug that needs something done in their district?  There's no one to have lunch with?  There's no hope in evening trying?

I think your talking points are showing...

          •  no. (0+ / 0-)

there are none left worth mentioning.

Teabuggers lurch to the beat of their own drummer, and nothing, no fact, no truth, and no economic statistic will sway them from their goal. Pity many of them do not even know what that goal might be. All they know is that the present form of govmint is wrong, and must be torn asunder.

you cannot negotiate with fascist teabuggers.

What we call god is merely a living creature with superior technology & understanding. If their fragile egos demand prayer, they lose that superiority.

            •  Let's count (0+ / 0-)

60 Teabaggers and 278 Repugs in Congress.

The minority rules?  Why not negotiate with the others?  I think they'd actually like that and as Joe and Nancy et al like to say "take their party back"...unless of course you like gridlock for its own sake.

              •  The minority have held the rest hostage for years. (0+ / 0-)

In case you haven't noticed, roughly 40 Senators have prevented almost anything that could help Americans be passed for 5 years not.  I'm surprised that anyone could even pretend to be surprised that a minority of the House have now taken the House speaker hostage as well.

Negotiate as much as you want with the rest of the House, but until you get the Speaker to agree, it simply doesn't matter.  He's the one who controls what gets to a vote.

                •  I'm just really tired (0+ / 0-)

of this victimhood meme and there's nothing to be done.  That wasn't the case in the past even when we Dems were not in the majority.  Why it is "true" now or have we just stopped trying?
