  •  thanks for that (14+ / 0-)

Mom and Dad, my sister and BIL are the only people that we exchange gifts. My sister's birthday is next week, she says "don't get me anything". I'm trying to still get her a little something, something creative and from the heart.

Old Mamasan would certainly be glad to know that Ronnie's gotten past it. I'll tell her the next time I see her. Stephen King, Hearts in Atlantis

    •  Mom knits (12+ / 0-)

One of my most-favored gifts is a hand-knit scarf from her.  And boy can she knit, that thing is about five years old and looks like the day it was made.

People really do appreciate made gifts, particularly when they were made with the person in mind.

My husband's getting peppermint soap, my mother will receive plumeria and rose.  With different formulae designed for them (and designed for the fact that my husband takes fifty minute showers).

    •  Another suggestion (5+ / 0-)

If you want to give something, agree to draw names within the family and put a limit on the amount spent.  That way everyone opens a present but no one spends much since each person only buys one present.  My grown children know I don't have much money and would like to retire in 5 years at the age of 70, and it was their idea that we draw names.  It has been just as much fun, and much less stressful on me and the bank account.

    •  one thing I've done is a gift subscription (2+ / 0-)

to a favorite periodical (I get about 40 to 50 percent off the regular subscription price this way, which halves the newsstand/cover cost).

Could you cook something special for your sister?
A favorite dish or perhaps a special dessert?
Or is there something you could attend together, perhaps a museum or a special performance of a nearby high school or college's presentation of  music or theatre?
