    and honestly I found it that way for many years. I can be a "character is plot" type of reader and that's not going to be true for every writer or every story. It's important to try to read/accept a work on its own terms.

    Heinlein put me off SF for a long time, and mysteries were my usual genre of choice. Then one day I picked up Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower and had a ZOMG what have I been missing? reaction and found so many writers to like.

    SF is probably far more respected now than it was in the 50s or 60s. Sometimes there's a sort of reverse snobbery from genre fans who are dismissive of "lit-fic" especially when writing borrows elements from genre.

    But like you, there are lots of thing I want to try, genre or not.
