  •  thatcher is wrong (19+ / 0-)

She should have said "I don't think there's such a thing as society."  That would have been correct.

Even more correct: "I'm a fucking savage."

No respect for her at all.  Horrid, awful, evil woman.

    •  I agree with you. (14+ / 0-)

Most people don't know that BSE even came into existence thanks to Maggie Thatcher, just as one example:

The food industry has always tended to put its profits ahead of our health and safety. The origins of the BSE crisis lie in Margaret Thatcher's extension of that principle to new heights of callousness. Thatcher's abolition of safety guidelines governing animal feed rendering, coupled with an increased drive to fatten animals as quickly and cheaply as possible (using the remains of other animals), led to the disease. At the same time, the Tories cut our means of checking food safety. The number of scientists involved in agriculture and food science fell from 6,500 to 3,500 between the mid-1980s and early 90s. Many food scientists are now employed by the very companies whose products they are supposed to be investigating.

      •  Same sort of thing happening here with the FDA (6+ / 0-)

Inspectors.now, not only are there fewer FDA inspectors at slaughterhouses and food manufacturers, the line has been speede up, reducing the time for inspection, AND your food inspectors are paid BY THE CORPORATION.  God knows what's ending up in our " food", but we'll find out someday when people start sickening and dying in massive numbers too large to ignore.  That is if we still have an independent CDC.

many of my fellow Americans call "food"and the lack of oversight. But I don't want to get too far off-topic here, except that I'm a firm believer that healthy nutrition = better health. So thrilled that Obamacare is finally becoming a reality for so many. About effin' time! Now if only people would become more educated about staying healthy to begin with by eating less denatured junk...

        •  technical correction: USDA not FDA for meats (0+ / 0-)

          for historical reasons.

    •  Her countrymen do not agree with her on that. (0+ / 0-)

If the majority of Britons felt that "there is no such a thing as society" they would not have kept their National Health Service for so many years through both Labour and Conservative governments.  The Conservative platform in the UK regarding NHS is more like "plug the loopholes for fraud and waste," rather than US conservatives who say "don't let it happen and if it does, repeal it."

Another of Mrs. Thatcher's countrymen, John Donne:

      No man is an island,
      Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
      A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
      Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
      Or of thine own were:
      Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
      And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
      It tolls for thee.
