Too bad Obama adopted a conservative Rube Goldberg scheme structured to bolster the current insurance system, and manifestly unable to protect the working poor from subsequent conservative attacks.

"I am confident that we're going to be able to leave the Gulf Coast in better shape than it was before." President Barack Obama

I am in no way Obama's biggest fan, but the Supreme Court ruling was completely out in left field. It was easy to imagine the SC invalidating the whole thing — and indeed, any public option, or even an expansion of Medicare — but nobody predicted that they would ex nihilo decide that the Federal government was never allowed to take away a benefit from a state once it had provided it. There were a hundred outcomes of varying probability predicted by people, but that simply wasn't even on the charts.

The idea that the federal government could not alter a program that all the states were already participating in by making it more generous? No. Cobbled together the ACA may be, but you can't ding the president for not predicting this specific piece of Supreme Court insanity.
